Chennai Airport-Kilambakkam Metro project all set to begin

The protracted standoff between Chennai Metro Rail Ltd. (CMRL) and the Highways department has been resolved, clearing the way for the much-anticipated Airport-Kilambakkam project to proceed.

While the Highways department wished to construct an elevated route till Tambaram, the CMRL had planned a mass rapid transit between the airport and Kilambakkam as an extension of the Phase I project in the southern portion of the city.

As a result, there were extensive negotiations between the two departments over the height of the elevated corridor and the level at which the Metro Rail viaduct should be erected.

Early this year, the CMRL sent the State government a full project report, but the discussions went on even after that.
