Boeing, a prominent US aerospace company, will spend roughly Rs 200 crore to establish a logistics facility in India that will first carry spare parts for its client airlines. Salil Gupte, president of Boeing India, told TOI that the goal is to assure quick delivery of spare parts to commercial airlines and then later to defence aircraft as well.
The action is taken right before Air India is expected to place a mega firm order for 220 Boeing aircraft—190 single aisle B737 Max, 20 B787 Dreamliners, and 10 B777X—which will include options for a significant number of additional aircraft that Tata Group can convert to firm orders at a later time without lengthy delivery periods.
“We have not yet decided on the location of proposed India logistics centre. To begin with it will cater to our commercial airline and as a distribution centre for our industrial customers. We will be housing spare parts in this centre as per customer requirements so that they can get the same expeditiously. This will significantly reduce the time aircraft need to be on ground awaiting spares. Later on we will keep spares for military aircraft at this centre,” Gupte said.
