Biggest CBG facility in Asia commences operation in Punjab

The biggest compressed biogas (CBG) facility in Asia has begun commercial production in the Sangrur district of Punjab.

According to AmanArora, the minister for new and renewable energy sources in Punjab. The project was put into operation in April 2022. At the factory in the village of BhuttalKalan (Sangrur), which had a total daily output capacity of 33.23 tonnes, commercial production of the CBG had started.

This CBG was being sent to an Indian Oil Corporation Ltd. branch (IOCL).

Arora says, “In addition to this, Punjab Energy Development Agency (PEDA) has also allocated forty-two additional CBG projects of a total capacity 492.58 tons per day (TPD) based on paddy straw and other agro-residue to develop a lasting and sustainable solution to prevent stubble-burning problem while also strengthening the rural economy”.

According to Arora, these initiatives are anticipated to attract private investment of over 1,200 croreArora further says, “With these projects, emission of greenhouse gases will also be decreased, and the rural economy will benefit by giving farmers more money from the agro residue”.
