Assam to get India’s first underwater road-rail tunnels

The Railway Ministry and the Road Transport Ministry, in collaboration with the Border Road Organisation (BRO), are intending to build the country’s first underwater road-rail tunnels in Assam, at a cost of Rs 7,000 crore.

According to the proposal, there will be three parallel tunnels: one for road traffic, one for rail traffic, and one for emergency usage. The tunnels will be 9.8 kilometres long each, and this will be the first project to include integrated tunnel construction. These tunnels will be interconnected by a cross route for emergency evacuation.

The strategic multi-modal transportation system proposes to connect the rail and highway networks in North Assam, Tawang, and the remainder of Arunachal Pradesh via the Jamurihat-Silghat axis.
