To support the state’s clothing sector, the West Bengal government intends to establish an apparel centre at Nungi in the Maheshtala region.
The hub will be constructed under a public-private partnership model under the Micro, Small and Medium Enterprises (MSME) and Textile Department. In the state, Nungi and Akra are widely recognised for producing denim.
For the hub, which will be run by private companies, the MSME department has chosen the develop-build-finance-operate-and-transfer (DBFOT) model.
By this week, the state government will choose the interested commercial partner. The unorganised clothing business is well-known in the Nungi neighbourhood and the neighbouring city of Metiabruz.
The government will set up 1,000 stalls that hawkers and roadside garment sellers in the neighbourhood can use, according to media reports from the state. There are also plans for setting up a mall inside the hub.
