Urban development

The Tamil Nadu government has unveiled a $1 billion plan for Kalaignar Nagarpura Membattu Thittam (KNMT) to address the infrastructural gap in urban local bodies, particularly municipalities and town panchayats.

Each urban local body will conduct ward-by-ward comprehensive surveys and produce an urban development plan (UDP) to identify current basic infrastructure and gaps that must be rectified.

There are 14 corporations, 121 municipalities, and 528 town panchayats in the state. While the Smart Cities Mission and AMRUT work to enhance the infrastructure of 11 corporations and 28 towns, the state government has devised a new plan to assist municipalities and town panchayats.
