India’s nuclear authority approves excavation for two 700 MW atomic power plants at Kaiga

The excavation for two 700 MW atomic power plants at Kaiga Generating Station in Karwar district, Karnataka, has been approved by India’s nuclear authority.

The approval of excavation for Units 5 and 6 at Kaiga signals the start of a new generation of 700 MW Pressurised Heavy Water Reactors (PHWRS) designed in India, which have become the backbone of India’s nuclear power programme.

On March 31, the Atomic Energy Regulatory Board (AERB) approved the site excavation of Kaiga Units 5 and 6.

In November 2020, the AERB approved the siting of the two nuclear power stations.
