Nearly a third of the work on the third desalination plant, which will process 150 million litres of seawater per day (mld) and is located along the East Coast Road near Nemmeli, has been finished.
The construction of a pipeline to bring treated water to various south Chennai and suburban districts, which would serve a population of 9 lakh people, is now underway. The plant is planned to be operational by April of the following year.
The AMRUT system is being implemented in a 10.6-acre site in the same location as the 100 mld desalination plant, with financial aid from KfW (German Development Bank). It would take up less room than the current facility.
Work is on to build various integral components of the plant, including intake sump, dissolved air flotation and ultra filter and reverse osmosis units.
