The government announced the Rs 6,322-crore production-linked incentive (PLI) scheme on October 22, 2021. The initiative intends to increase speciality steel production in India by attracting new investments worth Rs 40,000 crore and creating 5.25 lakh new jobs.

Coated/plated steel goods, high strength/wear-resistant steel, speciality rails, alloy steel products, steel wires, and electrical steel are the five categories of speciality steel covered under the PLI system. These grades are being imported for use in the United States.
