In an effort to be able to produce up to 101 MW of power by December of next year, the Telangana government has chosen to build five additional waste-to-energy (WTE) plants in addition to the one that is now in operation in Hyderabad’s historic dumpyard Jawaharnagar.
With its one WTE plant currently producing 24 MW of power and processing 1,500 MT (metric tonnes) of RDF (Refuse Derived Fuel), the city wants to lead the nation in WTE conversion by scaling up quickly.
The Municipal Administration department has set plans and targets for WTE plants at Dindigul (15 MW), to be ready by July 2023, and Jawaharnagar Phase 2 (24 MW), Pyaranagar (15 MW), Yacharam (12 MW) and Bibinagar (11 MW), all four to be ready by December 2024. With this, about 5,100 MT of RDF, equivalent to 15,000 MT of solid waste, will be utilised for WTE every day.
