East Coast Road expansion project to be realigned

The National Highways Authority of India may realign the East Coast Road (ECR) road extension project (two-lane to four-lane road) on the section between Mamallapuram and Puducherry (NHAI). The National Green Tribunal (NGT) has been notified by NHAI that it may be considering rerouting the road at the Odaiyur wetland in the Cheyyur taluk of the Chengalpet district. The charming ECR connects Chennai with Cuddalore via Puducherry and is a crucial road corridor in Tamil Nadu. The road was built in 1998 by connecting and enhancing a number of minor village roads that connected the fishing communities along the Bay of Bengal coast.
