At Chennai’s Greenways Road Station, Larsen & Toubro debuted S-1327A, the first of their eight tunnel boring machines for the 118.9 kilometre Chennai Metro Phase 2 project.
Together with 7 other TBMs, this 100m long 6.65″ Herrenknecht earth pressure balance (EPB) device known as TBM Kaveri will build a pair of 12 km long twin tunnels (for a total of 24 km) on the brand-new 45.813 km Line-3 between Kellys and Taramani Road Junction stations.
The machine’s initial task will be to bore 1.226 kilometres south from Greenways Road towards Adyar Junction Station, which CMRL intends to finish in August 2023. Near ThiruViKa Bridge, it will burrow beneath the Adyar River en route.
