Work on Chennai Port-Maduravoyal corridor likely to commence in June

After receiving approval from the Union Environment Ministry’s top advisory body last week, construction of the Chennai Port-Maduravoyal elevated corridor project, which has been stalled for 11 years, is expected to begin in June.

However, the ministry’s Expert Appraisal Committee (EAC) has asked authorities to check the stability of piles built for the project a few years ago and now lying abandoned with the help of IIT Madras or other reputable agencies if they intend to use them for the project.

The project’s lower six-lane tier will be used by cars, buses, and other vehicles, while the top four lanes will be used by portbound vehicles. The government hopes that this will help reduce traffic congestion in Egmore, Nungambakkam, Arumbakkam, and Koyambedu.
