ADB approves $780-million loan to expand metro rail network in Chennai

The Asian Development Bank (ADB) granted a $780 million multi-tranche financing facility (MFF) to expand Chennai’s metro rail network and enhance connectivity with the city’s current bus and feeder services.

Between Sholinganallur and the State Industries Promotion Corporation of Tamil Nadu-2, the project will build 10.1 km of elevated track, including 9 metro stations and other system components.

It will also build 10 km of underground track, including 9 stations, between Lighthouse and Meenakshi College, and 31 km of system components, including electrical, mechanical, power, and telecommunication infrastructure, between Chennai Mofussil Bus Terminus and Okkiyam Thoraipakkam.

Multimodal interchanges and facilities will be established along metro rail corridors to improve commuter experience, such as drop-off and pick-up areas, sheltered waiting areas, bicycle facilities, and passenger information.
