Urea production has started at Hindustan Urvarak & Rasayan Limited’s (HURL) Barauni Plant. In order to achieve self-sufficiency in the urea sector, the government has taken the initiative to reopen the shuttered urea plants of Fertilizer Corporation of India Ltd. (FCIL) and Hindustan Fertilizers Corporation Ltd. (HFCL). This initiative includes the cutting-edge gas-based Barauni Plant.
To increase the supply of domestically manufactured urea, the government’s top objective has been the revival of closed FCIL and HFCL facilities. Hindustan Urvarak & Rasayan Limited (HURL) was given a government order to resuscitate the Barauni unit with an estimated expenditure of $8,387 crore and a 12.7 LMTPA urea production capacity.
HURL is a joint venture company by Coal India Limited (CIL), NTPC Limited (NTPC), Indian Oil Corporation Limited (IOCL) and FCIL/HFCL mandated to revive Gorakhpur, Sindri and Barauni units with an estimated investment of ₹25,000 crore. The start of all the three plants of HURL will add 38.1 LMTPA indigenous urea production in the country.
