Parandur near Sriperumbudur has been chosen as the site to construct Chennai’s second airport.
In response to a query from Tamil Nadu’s Dr.Kanimozhi NVN Somu, a RajyaSabha member, Union Minister of State for Civil Aviation VK Singh stated on Monday that the state government had shortlisted Parandur as the site for the construction of the greenfield airport after comparing the viability and feasibility, including the presence of habitations and industrial establishments and the cost of land acquisition on both sides.
According to the terms of the Greenfield Airport Policy (2008), he said, the state government must now submit a proposal to the Ministry of Civil Aviation (MoCA) for approval of “site clearance.”
Singh noted that the Tamil Nadu government authorities had identified as many as four locations for the development of a greenfield airport near Chennai and requested the Airport Authority of India (AAI) to carry out inspection of sites to their sustainability for airport development.
